The 22nd National Academic Conference on Psychology was grandly held at Hangzhou Normal University
The 22nd National Academic Conference on Psychology took place grandly at Hangzhou Normal University from October 18 to 20, 2019, in warm celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Organized by the Chinese Psychological Society (CPS) and hosted by Hangzhou Normal University, the conference attracted more than 2,400 delegates from universities, research institutes, and social application organizations. The conference theme, "Research on Psychological Laws, Contribute to Social Development," showcased the commitment and resolve of Chinese psychology scientists to actively advance psychological scientific research and contribute to social development in the new era of socialist construction with Chinese characteristics.
On the morning of October 19, the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Psychology Academic Conference took place in the Academic Exchange Center of Hangzhou Normal University. Distinguished leaders and guests in attendance included Wang Lilin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Hangzhou Normal University, Professor Zhou Xiaolin of Peking University, President of the Conference and Chairman of the CPS, Principal Investigator Fu Xiaolan, Former President of the CPS and Director of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Principal Investigator Han Buxin of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the newly-elected President of the CPS, Professor Li Hong of Shenzhen University, Prof. Luo Jin of Capital Normal University, Secretary General of the CPS, Professor Zhang Kan of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Yang Yufang of the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Mo Lei of South China Normal University, Professor Shen Mowei of Zhejiang University, as well as Professor Zhang Houchuan of Beijing Normal University and Academician Tang Xiaowei of Zhejiang University, among others.
The opening ceremony was skillfully conducted by Professor Zang Yufeng, the executive chairman of the conference and executive director of the Institute of Psychological Science at Hangzhou Normal University. Professor Zhou Xiaolin, Chairman of the Conference, President of the CPS and Peking University, delivered an insightful address. Professor Zhou Xiaolin emphasized that since the 19th CPC National Congress, the Party and the nation have presented new tasks and elevated expectations for the field of psychology, assigning a crucial historical mission to Chinese psychologists. The CPS actively embraces Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, fully implements the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and the 2nd and 3rd Plenary Sessions of the 19th CPC Central Committee, and carries out the "Main Points of the Work of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology in 2019." Centering on the major goal of strengthening the construction of the social psychological service system and fostering self-esteem, self-confidence, rationality, calmness, and a positive social mentality, the association actively engages in discussions, deployments, pushes, implementations, and promotions of psychological scientific research work. Professor Zhou called on the CPS and psychologists nationwide to: first, bolster their self-confidence, concentrating on enhancing their independent innovation ability and conducting in-depth, high-quality, and systematic psychological research. Second, closely integrate with the Chinese context, exploring the psychological laws of Chinese people within the framework of Chinese history and culture, while also strengthening international cooperation to absorb global advanced technology and experiences, producing world-class psychological achievements. Third, actively respond to national strategic needs and the aspirations of the people for a better life, combining scientific and applied aspects of research.
Wang Lilin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Hangzhou Normal University (HNU), extended a warm welcome to the esteemed experts, scholars, and guests from various fields. He expressed gratitude to colleagues in the national psychology community for their unwavering support for the psychology discipline at HNU. Wang provided an overview of HNU, highlighting the significant accomplishments of the psychology discipline in recent years. Stressing the crucial role of psychology in fostering a harmonious and stable society and nurturing "cultural confidence," he reiterated HNU's commitment to the development of the psychology discipline. Wang Lilin hoped for continued care and support for the ongoing progress of psychology at Hangzhou Normal University.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Li Shu, Editor-in-Chief of Acta Psychologica Sinica, and Professor Liang Ningjian, Editor-in-Chief of Psychological Science, announced the 2018 Outstanding Paper Awards of their respective journals and presented certificates to the winners.
During the conference, Professor Shi Kan of Renmin University of China, Professor Liu Chao of Beijing Normal University, Professor Wang Liang of Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Chen Hui of Zhejiang University, Professor Luo Wenbo of Liaoning Normal University, and Professor Yi Li of Peking University gave lectures entitled "Research on the Psychosocial Facilitation Mechanisms for the Great Revival of the Chinese Nation", “Psychological and Brain Science Research and Application of Moral Cognition and Emotion", "Neural Oscillation Mechanisms of Human Spatial Navigation Behavior and Clinical Applications", "Mechanisms of Attention and Working Memory Interaction", "A Time Perception Study of Methamphetamine Addicts", and "Early Visual Attention in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders", respectively. From different perspectives, the experts elaborated that only by closely integrating with the needs of the society, responding to the hotspots and concerns of the society in a timely manner, and producing high-level research results, can psychology research better serve the society.
The number of online registration this conference is 2166, the actual number of attendees is 2407, a total of 2718 valid abstracts were received, and 1578 academic papers were exchanged by the academic committee of the conference according to the proportion of the review. The conference organized a variety of academic exchanges in the form of two 6 invited reports, 4 academic forums, 51,280 thematic reports, 176 master and doctoral students forum reports, 84 oral reports, a total of 441 oral reports, 4 total of 663 exhibition posting reports.
944 abstracts from free submissions to different Professional Committees were accepted, distributed as follows: 86 from Educational Psychology, 135 from Developmental Psychology, 10 from Theoretical Psychology and History of Psychology, 98 from General and Experimental Psychology, 25 from Industrial Psychology, 19 from Medical Psychology, 7 from Physiological Psychology, 56 from Sports and Exercise Psychology, 2 from Legal Psychology, 38 from School Psychology, 39 from Psychometrics, 94 from Social Psychology, 47 from Clinical and Counseling Psychology, 4 from Military Psychology, 22 from Personality Psychology, 13 from Engineering Psychology, 31 articles from Psychology of Decision Making, 23 from Geriatric Psychology, 4 from Ethic Psychology, 16 from Nursing Psychology, 15 from Linguistic Psychology, 11 from Community Psychology, 31 from Cyberpsychology, 51 from Emotional and Health Psychology, 18 from Psychological Neuroimaging, 5 from Music Psychology, 13 from Eye Movement Psychology, 4 from Qualitative Psychology, 11 from Electroencephalography-related Technologies, 12 from Psychology and Social Governance, and 4 from Cultural Psychology. Abstracts were accepted for 336 abstracts (69 for PhD and 267 for MSc), of which 176 were submitted in full text (60 for PhD and 116 for MSc).
The Congress coordinated and conducted 51 high-level symposia, each organized by its respective Professional Committee, including Educational Psychology, Developmental Psychology, General and Experimental Psychology, Physiological Psychology, Legal Psychology, School Psychology, Social Psychology, Clinical and Counseling Psychology, Personality Psychology, Psychology of Decision-Making, Gereopsychology, Nursing Psychology, Linguistic Psychology, Community Psychology, Emotion and Health Psychology, Psychological Neuroimaging, Music Psychology, Eye Movement Psychology, Qualitative Psychology, Electroencephalography-related Technologies, Psychology and Social Governance, and Cultural Psychology. During these symposia, experts shared their cutting-edge research progress and notable achievements, engaging in enlightening discussions with peers and young scholars from across the nation. The presentations were characterized by their high quality and level, fostering a dynamic and lively atmosphere that resonated positively with the audience.
The congress also featured four specialized forums. Notably, the "Multidisciplinary Forum for Young People at Home and Abroad," hosted by Professors Zang Yufeng, Fu Genyue, and Dong Guangheng from the Institute of Psychological Science at Hangzhou Normal University, provided an excellent platform for communication among young psychologists both domestically and internationally. This forum played a pivotal role in fostering academic cooperation among psychologists from diverse backgrounds. The "Forum on Matching Psychological Services to National Needs" was designed to address the mandates outlined in the 19th CPC National Congress Report, emphasizing the imperative to "strengthen the construction of the social psychological service system" and cultivate positive social values. Discussions in this forum centered around aligning psychological disciplines with the major needs of the nation. In an endeavor to align with prevailing trends in fund application, facilitate the ongoing development of the psychological discipline, and nurture scientific and technological talent, Professor Zhou Xiaolin of Peking University spearheaded the "National Natural Fund Application Forum." This forum featured insights from various experts who shared their experiences in securing fundings within the field of psychology. Principal Investigator Han Buxin from the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences hosted a special forum on “Theoretical Reflections and Empirical Research in Religious Cultural Psychology”, delving into the integration of traditional art, local culture, religious beliefs, and empirical and qualitative research methods in psychology. The forum aimed to explore the practical application and inheritance of traditional Chinese culture in the new era.
In the afternoon of October 20, the conference successfully concluded all its scheduled activities with a closing ceremony at the Academic Exchange Center of Hangzhou Normal University. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Luo Jin, Secretary General of the Congress and Secretary General of the CPS. To commence the proceedings, Professor Zhou Xiaolin, President of the Conference and former President of the CPS, delivered a comprehensive summary of the conference. He emphasized that our generation is entrusted with the noble mission of "researching psychological laws and assisting social development." This mission lies in unwavering confidence, independence, and enhancing capacity of innovation. The goal is to provide a high-quality supply of science and technology, leveraging the supportive role of psychology in the construction of China's modernized economic system and the development of a socialist society with Chinese characteristics. The diverse array of topics covered in the conference, spanning psychology and social governance, psychological services tailored to national needs, the study of "cultural self-confidence" from a psychological perspective, and exploration of issues such as school bullying, autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), societal aging, and addiction, showcased the high-quality research conducted by contemporary Chinese psychology experts and scholars. The conference not only provided a valuable platform for in-depth exchanges between domestic and foreign counterparts but also underscored the strategic importance of psychology in national development, reflecting a strong sense of social responsibility and mission among Chinese psychologists.
Subsequently, Professor Uyuntena of Inner Mongolia Normal University, as the representative of the organizing committee for the next National Academic Conference of Psychology, extended a warm invitation to all attendees. He welcomed them to participate in the 23rd National Psychology Conference scheduled to take place in Hohhot in 2020.
Concluding the event, Professor Han Buxin, on behalf of the CPS, expressed gratitude to Hangzhou Normal University for the successful organization of the conference. He also extended sincere thanks to Professor Zhou Xiaolin, the former president of CPS, for his dedicated efforts in advancing the field of psychology in China over the past year. Professor Han emphasized the importance of reinforcing communication and collaboration within the field of psychology, both domestically and globally. He stressed the need to strengthen the discourse on psychology's development, establish connections with governmental departments at various levels, actively participate in substantive international decision-making, and collectively uphold the dignity of psychology. Looking forward, he highlighted the commitment of the new council to follow the development blueprint set by their predecessors, enhance the quality of teaching, elevate educational standards, concentrate on educational development, and advance the professionalization, standardization, and systematization of psychology's work. Professor Han encouraged the community of psychological workers to join forces in pursuing the goal of building a world-class discipline. He urged continuous efforts to enhance the CPS's organizational strength, academic leadership, strategic support, cultural dissemination, and international influence.
The successful conclusion of the 22nd National Academic Conference of Psychology has not only provided valuable opportunities for domestic and international psychologists to engage in academic exchanges and collaborations but has also reinforced the vital link between psychological research and the broader development of national society. The conference underscored the pivotal role of psychology in supporting the realization of national strategies, contributing to social and economic development, fostering cultural self-confidence, and enhancing the innovative awareness and service capabilities of psychology researchers. This achievement holds immense significance for advancing the rapid development of China's psychological discipline, encompassing both scientific research and societal service.
